MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS CRUSH 5 HOME RUNS IN WIN AT TWINS

Cleveland won 8-1 at Minnesota last night

Danny Salazar allowed just a run in seven innings and was backed by five Tribe homers in an 8-1 over the Twins at Target Field on Tuesday night.

-The Tribe trailed 1-0 before Carlos Santana hit a solo shot in the fourth, followed by solo shots by Jason Kipnis and Edwin Encarnacion in the fifth. (Encarnacion has five homers in his last five games and 27 for the season.)

-Later, Austin Jackson broke the game open with a three-run homer to make it 6-1, and Santana added a second solo shot to make it five for the team.

-The Indians series at Minnesota continues tonight at 7:37/8:10 pm – LIVE on 95.3 WLKR. Carlos Carrasco will pitch for the Tribe.

INDIANS INJURY NEWS

-Outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall was 1 for 3 with an RBI double last night while rehabbing at Triple-A Columbus.  Chisenhall played right field last night; and is scheduled to play all 3 outfield positions during his rehab assignment.  Chisenhall has been on the disabled list since July 11th with a right calf injury.

-Reliever Andrew Miller is also scheduled to throw one-inning for Triple-A Columbus tonight as he rehabs from injury.  He’s likely to return to the Indians roster on Friday night if all goes well.  Miller has missed 2 weeks of action with right knee tendinitis.

BASEBALL – CRUSHERS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER LAST NIGHT AT WINDY CITY

Lake Erie beat Windy City 5-3 in game one, lost 6-0 in game two

-The Crushers play at Windy City again tonight at 7:05 pm.

NFL – BROWNS TODAY TO NAME STARTING QB FOR MONDAY

-Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson is expected today to name his starting quarterback for the Browns next preseason game. The choice likely between rookie DeShone Kizer and Brock Osweiler.

-The Browns are home Monday night to take on the New York Giants in week 2 of the preseason.

NFL – ELLIOTT TO APPEAL SUSPENSION

The NFL players union has appealed the six-game suspension of Dallas Cowboys running back and former Buckeye Ezekiel Elliott.

-A hearing will take place August 29th with Commissioner Roger Goodell.

-The NFL suspended Elliott last week after a 13-month investigation involving alleged domestic violence.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL – ESPN TO FEATURE ‘MEGACAST’ FOR OSU OPENER

-ESPN has announced that they will feature a version of their ‘MegaCast’ for the Ohio State at Indiana season opener on August 31st.

-The broadcast will include six alternative presentations across their family of networks and online including a ‘coaches film room’, a ‘homer’ broadcast focusing on Indiana and a ‘SkyCam’ perspective.

-The Buckeyes radio broadcast can be heard live on 95.3 WLKR starting at 6:30 pm with kickoff at 8:00 pm.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS WIN AT BOSTON LAST NIGHT

Cleveland defeated Boston 7-3 last night at Fenway Park in the makeup of a rainout earlier this month.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a pair of 2-run homers over the green monster last night along with driving in 4 runs.  Encarnacion now has 26 home runs on this season.

Francisco Lindor also had 2 RBI.

Trevor Bauer struck out 11 Red Sox last night while giving up 3 runs in 6+ innings.

-The Indians begin a 3-game series at Minnesota tonight at 7:37/8:10 pm – LIVE on 95.3 WLKR. Danny Salazar will pitch for the Tribe against 44-year-old former Indian Bartolo Colon for Minnesota.

-Heading into play tonight, Cleveland leads the AL Central division by 5 games over the Minnesota Twins.

MLB BASEBALL – MILLER LIKELY BACK FRIDAY FOR TRIBE

-Indians star relief pitcher Andrew Miller will play in a rehab game for Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday night.  If all goes well, Miller will probably be activated from the disabled list on Friday.  Miller has been out since August 3rd with right knee tendinitis.

NBA – FULL SCHEDULE RELEASED

The Cleveland Cavaliers will open the 2017-18 campaign on Tuesday, October 17 at The Q against the Boston Celtics at 8:00 p.m. ET on TNT.

The Cavs will play 17 weekend home dates comprised of five Friday games, seven Saturday games and five Sunday games.

-The Cavaliers are slated to appear on at least 39 national television broadcasts, 20 of which will originate from downtown Cleveland at The Q.

The Cavs will visit Golden State for a Christmas Day matchup on ABC at 3:00 pm ET.

The Cavaliers will close out the regular season at home versus New York on April 11th.

-Cleveland has 13 sets of back-to-back games (down from 18 last season).

NCAA FOOTBALL – WISCONSIN & NOTRE DAME TO PLAY AT NEUTRAL SITES

Wisconsin and Notre Dame have agreed to play future matchups at historic neutral sites.

-The teams will meet at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin in the year 2020 and at Soldier Field in Chicago in 2021.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS WIN 3 OF 4 IN TAMPA

Cleveland beat Tampa Bay 4-3 on Sunday afternoon

-Tribe outfielder Austin Jackson hit a solo home run (his 4th) in the 8th inning that broke a 3-3 tie.

-Edwin Encarnacion also had a solo shot (his 24th).

-The newest member of the Tribe, Jay Bruce, had an RBI double.  Since joining the Indians Thursday, Bruce is 5 for 12 with 3 runs driven in.

-Corey Kluber continued his dominance in picking up his 11th win by going 7 innings while giving up 3 runs on 4 hits with 9 strikeouts.

-The Indians play tonight at Boston at 5:37/6:10 pm – LIVE on 95.3 WLKR. Tonight is a makeup game from a rainout on August 2nd.  Trevor Bauer will pitch for the Indians.

-Cleveland now leads the AL Central division by 4 ½ games over Minnesota.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL – FLORIDA SUSPENDS 7 PLAYERS FOR OPENER

The Florida Gators have suspended 7 players for their season opener versus Michigan.  Florida is ranked #16 and Michigan is #9 in the coaches’ preseason poll.

-The suspensions are due to players making improper charges on their student ID cards at their school’s bookstore; then reselling those items for cash.

-Included in the suspensions is top wide receiver Antonio Callaway.

MEN’S GOLF – AMERICAN THOMAS WINS PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

American golfer Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC.  Thomas shot a 3-under-par 68 in Sunday’s final round to end up with an eight-under-par for the tournament; winning by 2 strokes in the final major of the season.

NASCAR – LARSON WINS AGAIN AT M.I.S.

Kyle Larson was the winner of Sunday’s Monster Energy Cup Series Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway on K96.  It was Larson’s third win this season and third straight win at Michigan.  Larson pulled away during an overtime restart to beat out 2nd place finisher Martin Truex Jr. and Erik Jones; who finished 3rd.

-Next up for the Monster Energy Cup Series is the Bristol night race this Saturday.

NFL PRESEASON – BROWNS WIN PRESEASON OPENER LAST NIGHT

Cleveland beat New Orleans 20-14

-Rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer threw for 190 yards and a TD in his debut; including a 45-yard touchdown pass with under 2:00 left.

-Looking at the Browns QB competition, Brock Osweiler was 6/14 passing for 42 yards in the first quarter while other Browns QB Cody Kessler threw for 47 yards on 5/10 passing.

-The Browns next preseason game will be a week from Monday, at home versus the New York Giants (8:00 pm).

BASEBALL – CRUSHERS GAME STOPPED LAST NIGHT DUE TO RAIN

Lake Erie Crushers led at Traverse City 1-0 last night before rain stopped the game after 4 innings. 

-The game will be resumed when Traverse City visits Avon later this month.

-The Crushers return home this weekend to take on Schaumburg, starting tonight at 7:05 pm.  The series continues Saturday at 6:05 pm and Sunday at 2:05 pm in Avon.

NBA – CAVS AT WARRIORS AGAIN ON CHRISTMAS DAY

The NBA released its Christmas Day schedule and its slate of games for the first week of the 2017-18 season.

-The NBA season will begin in Cleveland on Wednesday, October 17th at the Cavs host the Boston Celtics at 8:00 pm.  Houston will visit Golden State in the other opening night matchup.

-The Cleveland Cavaliers will again take on the Golden State Warriors in another Christmas Day showdown.  The Cavs will be on the road for a 3:00 pm ET tipoff on ABC.  Houston will be at Oklahoma City at 8:00 pm in another marquee matchup on Christmas Day.

-As for the NBA preseason, the Cavs will have 3 home games at The Q, beginning with their preseason opener on October 4th versus Atlanta.  Indiana and Chicago will also travel to Cleveland in the preseason.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS TRADE FOR BRUCE

The Cleveland Indians last night acquired multiple-time All-Star outfielder Jay Bruce from the New York Mets.

-The Indians traded minor league relief pitcher Ryder Ryan to the Mets and have agreed to cover the remaining $5 million left on Bruce’s contract for 2017.

-Bruce was batting .258 with 29 home runs and 75 RBI for the Mets.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS LOSE TO COLORADO IN EXTRAS

Cleveland lost 3-2 yesterday afternoon to Colorado in 12 innings

-With the Indians up 2-1 in the 9th, Colorado tied the game on an RBI double from Jonathan Lucroy off Tribe closer Cody Allen.  The Rockies then took the lead on a solo home run from Charlie Blackmon in the 12th.

-The loss spoiled a great outing by Tribe starter Trevor Bauer; who allowed just a run in 7 innings with 9 strikeouts.

-The Indians open a 4-game series at the Tampa Bay Rays tonight at 6:37/7:10 pm – LIVE on 95.3 WLKR.  Danny Salazar will be on the mound tonight for the Tribe.

Atlanta has re-signed running back Devonta Freeman to a 5-year contract extension worth $41 million.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS WIN IN WALK-OFF FASHION OVER ROCKIES

Cleveland won 4-1 last night over Colorado

-After trailing 1-0 on a leadoff Colorado home run on the second pitch of the game, the Indians rallied for 4 runs in the 9th inning to stun the Rockies at Progressive Field.

– Austin Jackson tied the game in the 9th with a two-out RBI single after Edwin Encarnacion and Bradley Zimmer walked.   Tribe catcher Yan Gomes then hit a 3-run walk-off home run (7th) on the first pitch he saw from Rockies closer Greg Holland.

-Corey Kluber was again dominant on the mound for the Indians; throwing a complete game with 11 strikeouts and just 3 hits allowed.

-Indians outfielder Michael Brantley left last night’s game in the 5th inning with an ankle sprain.  The severity of the injury is not known.

-The quick 2-game series wraps up today in Cleveland at 11:37 am/12:10 pm – LIVE on 95.3 WLKR.  Trevor Bauer will pitch today for the Tribe.

MLB BASEBALL – UMPIRE JOE WEST SUSPENDED

Major League Baseball’s most tenured umpire Joe West has been suspended for three days due to comments made about Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre.

-In a USA Today report in June meant to happen along with West’s 5,000th regular-season game, West was quoted as saying that Beltre was the biggest complainer in the major leagues.

The New England Patriots are now the first NFL team to have their own plane.

ESPN reports that New England has bought two 767 Boeing wide-body jets and fitted them with first-class seats.  The planes generally cost between $5 million and $65 million; depending on condition.

MLB BASEBALL – TWO FORMER PLAYERS PASS AWAY

The baseball world is mourning the loss of two former players.

-Don Baylor passed away from cancer on Monday.  Baylor, who played for 19 years, was AL MVP with the Angels in 1979. Baylor won a World Series title with Minnesota in 1987.  He also managed the Colorado Rockies and the Chicago Cubs.  He was 68.

-Former Phillies catcher and 3-time All-Star, Darren Daulton died on Sunday from cancer.  Nicknamed “Dutch”, Daulton played 14 years in the big leagues, 13 ½ of those with Philadelphia.  He finished his career with the Florida Marlins, winning a World Series in 1997 before retiring.  Daulton was 55.

NFL – BROWNS NAMED STARTING QB FOR PRESEASON OPENER

The Cleveland Browns have announced that Brock Osweiler will be their starting quarterback in their preseason opener on Thursday.

-Osweiler will be followed in order by Cody Kessler and rookie DeShone Kizer as the Browns host New Orleans on Thursday night at 8:00 pm.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL – BUCKEYES PLAYER SUSPENDED

Ohio State senior defensive tackle Michael Hill has been suspended by the team.

-Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer has not explained the reason for the suspension or how long it will be.  The only thing Meyer has said is that the suspension will be for “a few games”.

NBA – FORMER CAVS GM AGREES WITH KYRIE’S APPROACH

Former Cavaliers GM David Griffin appeared on ESPN Monday and said that Kyrie Irving showed courage by how he’s handling his trade situation.

-On ESPN’s “The Jump”, Griffin said Irving shown courage by asking for his trade in private with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert; rather than pretending everything is alright.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS AND YANKEES SPLIT 4-GAME SERIES

Cleveland lost 8-1 against the New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon

-The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning and held that advantage until the 6th inning when the Yankees scored 5 times in the 6th and 3 more times in the 7th inning.

-New York scored 3 of their runs in the 6th inning on a fly ball that was misplayed by Indians right fielder Abraham Almonte that was ruled a triple off the bat of Jacoby Ellsbury.

-Yankees rookie Aaron Judge hit a 3-run homer; his American League leading 35th of the season.

-New York pitcher Luis Severino improved to 9-4; limiting the Tribe offense to just 1 run on 2 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

-Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis returned from the disabled list Sunday; going 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts.

-Cleveland is off today.  The Tribe hosts Colorado in a two-game series starting Tuesday night at 7:10 pm.

NFL NEWS & NOTES – CUTLER BACK, COLLINS SUSPENDED, SMITH INJURED

-Former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Miami Dolphins.  The 34-year-old Cutler had originally retired back in May; when he was hired as a TV analyst by Fox Sports.

-Atlanta cornerback Jalen Collins has been suspended the first 10 games of the regular season without pay by the NFL for violating the league’s performance-enhancement drugs policy. It’s the second time Collins has been suspended for breaking the policy.

-San Francisco linebacker Malcolm Smith could miss the entire season after suffering a pectoral tear injury in practice this past weekend.  Smith, a former Super Bowl MVP, signed a 5-year deal with the 49ers in the offseason.

PGA GOLF – MATSUYAMA WINS IN AKRON

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama won this past weekend’s PGA World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron.  He won by shooting a -16, five strokes ahead of second place finisher, American Zach Johnson.

NASCAR – TRUEX WINS AT WATKINS GLEN

Martin Truex Jr. won the Monster Energy Cup ‘I Love New York 355’ at Watkins Glen on Sunday afternoon on K96.  Matt Kenseth placed 2nd with Daniel Suarez in 3rd place.

-It was Truex’s fourth win of the season; and his first career victory at The Glen.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS BEAT YANKEES THURSDAY NIGHT

Cleveland won 5-1 last night versus the New York Yankees

-Tribe ace Corey Kluber threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts while allowing just 1 run on 3 hits.

-The Indians grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning thanks to three Yankee errors.

-Tribe catcher Yan Gomes drove in 2 runs and shortstop Francisco Lindor hit a solo home run (18th).

-The Indians host the Yankees again tonight at 6:37/7:10 pm – LIVE on 95.3 WLKR.  Trevor Bauer will pitch tonight for the Tribe.

-The 4-game series versus New York continues Saturday at 7:10 pm and a 1:10 start on Sunday; with all games live on 95.3 WLKR.

Cleveland’s game at Boston was postponed due to inclement weather on Wednesday night

-The game will be made up on Monday, August 14th.

-The Indians are back home tonight to start a 4-game series versus the New York Yankees at 6:37/7:10 pm – LIVE on 95.3 WLKR.

-It’s an outstanding pitching matchup tonight; as Corey Kluber will be on the mound for Cleveland against Sonny Gray, who will be making his Yankees debut tonight after recently being traded from Oakland. Trevor Bauer’s start has been moved to Friday night.

MLB NEWS – PHILLIES CANCEL ROSE APPEARANCE AMID ALLEGATIONS

Due to recent allegations, the Philadelphia Phillies have announced that Pete Rose won’t be a part of the team’s Alumni Weekend activities next week; and have cancelled their planned tribute to him after Rose had been voted by fans to be inducted into the team’s Wall of Fame.

-According to an ESPN report, an unidentified woman has alleged that Rose had an inappropriate relationship with her back in the 1970s, beginning before she turned 16.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS LOSE A WILD ONE IN BOSTON LAST NIGHT

Cleveland lost 12-10 at Boston on Tuesday night

-The Indians led 5-0 early before Boston tied the game with a 5-run 2nd inning that knocked pitcher Carlos Carrasco out of the game.  The Tribe then took a 7-5 lead in the 5th but Boston took the lead 9-7 with 4-run 6th inning.

-Cleveland grabbed the lead back 10-9 with 2 runs in the 9th off Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel; but Boston catcher Christian Vazquez hit a 3-run walk-off home run with 2 outs in the 9th inning off Tribe closer Cody Allen to give the Red Sox a wild win at Fenway.

-In the loss, the Indians crushed 4 home runs with 2-run blasts from Brandon Guyer (2) and Edwin Encarnacion (22); and solo shots by Carlos Santana (15) and Francisco Lindor (17).

-Tribe center fielder Austin Jackson robbed Boston’s Hanley Ramirez of a solo-home run in the 5th by making an unbelievable catch by leaping at the right center field wall and landing in the bullpen while holding on to the baseball.  Jackson’s grab could be the play of the year in Major League Baseball.

-The Indians wrap up their 3-game series at Boston tonight at 6:37/7:10 pm – LIVE on 95.3 WLKR. Trevor Bauer will be on the mound for Cleveland.

-Early defensive miscues by the Tribe led to starting pitcher Mike Clevinger only lasting 3 innings while giving up 5 runs.

-Bradley Zimmer hit a 2-run home run (8) for the Tribe in the 8th inning.

-Before last night’s game, Cleveland placed starting pitcher Josh Tomlin on the 10-day disabled list due to a left-hamstring strain. Left-handed reliever Tyler Olson was recalled from Triple-A.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS BRING SMITH BACK HOME

Cleveland acquired right-handed reliver and side-arm thrower Joe Smith from Toronto for two minor leaguers.

-Smith, now in his 11th season, previously played for Cleveland from 2009 to 2013.

-Smith is married to Vermilion’s Allie LaForce, current CBS and Turner Sports sideline reporter and former Fox 8 Cleveland sports anchor.

-The Chicago Cubs acquired left-handed relief pitcher Justin Wilson and catcher Alex Avila from Detroit for prospects.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to a one-year contract extension with head coach John Tortorella.

-The contract will keep Tortorella with Columbus through the 2018-19 season. Tortorella led the Blue Jackets to franchise records in wins and points last season; while winning the NHL’s Coach of the Year award.

SPORTS NEWS – LOS ANGELES TO HOST FUTURE OLYMPICS

The city of Los Angeles, California has reached an agreement with Olympic leaders that will allow for the city to host the 2028 Summer Games. The deal will likely become official in September.

-It would be the third time the city hosts the Olympics (1932 and 1984).

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS ARE WINNERS OF FIVE STRAIGHT

Cleveland won 11-7 in 11 innings last night over the L.A. Angels

-Edwin Encarnacion hit a walk-off grand slam in the 11th inning to give the Indians an 11-7 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night at Progressive Field. The Tribe has won five straight and eight of its last nine games at Progressive Field.

-Bradley Zimmer hit his first career grand slam as part of a seven-run second inning that staked the Indians to an early 7-0 lead. Michael Brantley also homered, while Jose Ramirez had an RBI double.

-The Angels, though, rallied to tie it, with four in the third (including a three-run Kole Calhoun homer) and a Luis Valbuena two-run homer.

-The two grand slams marked the first time the Tribe hit two grand slams in the same game since Sept. 24, 1999.

NFL – FORMER BROWNS PLAYER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins has announced his retirement.

-The 31-year-old who played for Cleveland from 2014 to 2016, said his body just wasn’t ready for another training camp.  Hawkins had signed a one-year deal with New England in the offseason.

NFL – TRAINING CAMP BEGINS THURSDAY FOR CLEVELAND

The Cleveland Browns open up Training Camp tomorrow in Berea.  The Browns will practice in front of fans for the first time on Thursday from 3:00 to 5:30 pm.

-The Browns preseason opener is Thursday, August 10th at home versus New Orleans.

The upcoming boxing match between boxer Floyd Mayweather and UFC fighter Conor McGregor will not only air on pay-per-view, but also on the big screen.

-Fathom Events and Mayweather Promotions have announced that they will bring the August 26 fight in Las Vegas to movie theaters. The movie screening will cost significantly less than the pay-per-view, $40, compared to around $100.  Locally it will be shown at the Cinemark behind the Sandusky Mall and in Strongsville at the Southpark Mall.

Cleveland won 6-2 against Cincinnati last night at Progressive Field. 

-Carlos Santana blasted 2 solo home runs (12) for the Indians.

-Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin picked up the win (7-9) while holding the Reds to 2 runs on 4 hits in 6 innings of work with 6 strikeouts.

NBA – CAVS SIGN ROSE

The Cleveland Cavaliers have reportedly signed free agent guard Derrick Rose to a one-year deal.

-The 28-year-old Rose, an 8-year NBA veteran, scored 18 points per game a season ago for New York.  Rose won the NBA MVP award back in 2011 with Chicago.

CAVS NAME ALTMAN AS NEW GM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have promoted assistant general manager Koby Altman to GM.

-Altman, has been a member of the Cavs basketball front office for the past five years, most recently serving as Assistant General Manager, having been promoted to that position in September 2016.  Altman, at age 34, is one of the youngest executives in the league along with new Milwaukee GM Jon Horst.

NFL – ELWAY STAYING IN DENVER AS GM

John Elway has agreed to a 5-year contract extension to keep him as the general manager of the Denver Broncos through the 2021 season.

-The Broncos Hall of Famer will become the highest-paid GM in the NFL (undisclosed amount).

NASCAR NEWS – DALE JR. TO JOIN NBC TV NEXT YEAR

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has signed a multi-year deal to join NBC television in the booth for NASCAR broadcasts beginning next season.

-The 42-year-old Earnhardt Jr. will retire from full-time competition at the end of this season with Alex Bowman driving his Hendrick Motorsports # 88 Chevrolet in 2018.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS SWEEP THE JAYS

Cleveland defeated Toronto 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field

-The win gave the Tribe a 3-game sweep of the Blue Jays over the weekend.

Corey Kluber dominated on the mound with 14 strike outs in 7 2/3 innings; allowing just 1 run on 5 hits.

-The Indians scored 4 times in the first inning; thanks in part to a 3-run double from Brandon Guyer.

Michael Brantley drove in 3 runs including a 2-run home run (his 6th).

-The Indians host the Cincinnati Reds in a 1-game series tonight at 6:37/7:10 pm – LIVE on 95.3 WLKR.  Josh Tomlin will pitch this evening for the Tribe.  The game is a makeup of a rain out back in May.

NBA – CAVS – IRVING REPORTEDLY WANTS OUT

The big news over the weekend is that Cavs superstar guard Kyrie Irving reportedly has asked Cleveland to trade him.  According to ESPN, Irving says he no longer wants to play alongside LeBron James; and that he wants to be more of a team’s focal point.  Irving has three years and $60 million left on his contract; but could opt out of the final year.

-The Cavs are also reportedly close to promoting assistant general manager Koby Altman to GM.

-ESPN is reporting that LeBron James will NOT waive his no-trade clause at any point during this upcoming season.  James is signed through next season with a player option for the 2018-19 season.

NFL – PEPPERS SIGNS WITH BROWNS

All ten of the Cleveland Browns’ draft picks have now signed after defensive back Jabrill Peppers inked his rookie contract Sunday night.  The Michigan product was drafted in the 1st round, 25th overall.

MEN’S GOLF – SPIETH WINS BRITISH OPEN

– American Jordan Spieth won the PGA British Open this past weekend at Royal Birkdale in England.  Spieth shot 5-under-par in the final five holes to finish 3-shots ahead of American Matt Kuchar.

-Spieth has won 3 of the 4 grand slams in his career with a chance to win all 4 next month at the PGA Championship.

WOMEN’S GOLF – LPGA MARATHON CLASSIC NEAR TOLEDO

In-Kyung Kim was the winner of the LPGA Marathon Classic over the weekend at Highland Meadows in Sylvania, near Toledo.

NASCAR –  KAHNE WINS BRICKYARD

Kasey Kahne won in overtime in the Monster Energy Cup Series Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis on Sunday live on K96.  Kahne survived three crashes in the last 50 laps in a wild race that included a two-hour weather delay; that finished up close to sunset (around 9:00 pm).  Darkness would’ve been an issue due to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway not having lights.

-The Monster Energy Cup will be at Pocono Raceway this Sunday (2:00 pm on K96).

SPORTS NEWS – O.J. SIMPSON GRANTED EARLY RELEASE

O.J. Simpson was granted an early release from prison during his parole hearing on Thursday in Lovelock, Nevada.

-The 70-year-old Simpson could be out of prison as early as October 1st.

-Simpson is serving time in prison for being convicted in 2008 of an armed robbery in which he and others stole hundreds of pieces of sports memorabilia from two men in a Las Vegas hotel room.

NBA – CAVS IN ‘SERIOUS TALKS’ WITH ROSE

The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly in serious talks with free agent guard Derrick Rose regarding a one-year contract.

-Rose, a former NBA MVP with Chicago, averaged 18 points per game with the New York Knicks last season.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL – OLE MISS COACH OUT

Ole Miss football head coach Hugh Freeze resigned on Thursday due to school officials finding a pattern of phone calls linking Freeze to a female escort service.

-Freeze will not be paid the nearly $12 million that’s left on his contract that would’ve ran through 2019; as he would’ve been fired if he didn’t resign.  He had been with Ole Miss since 2012.

-The LPGA Marathon Classic is going on this weekend in Sylvania, Ohio.  Gerina Piller leads after Thursday’s first round at 8-under-par.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS FALL LATE TO SAN FRAN

Cleveland lost at San Francisco Wednesday afternoon 5-4

-With the Indians leading 4-2 in the 8th inning, the Giants struck for 3 runs which included a pinch-hit 2-run double by Buster Posey to put San Francisco ahead. The hit by Posey came after an error by Indians first baseman Carlos Santana on a potential inning-ending double play.

-Bryan Shaw took the loss in relief (2-4); allowing 2 runs on 2 hits in the 8th inning.

-In the loss, Michael Brantley collected his 1,000th career hit and Jose Ramirez drove in 2 runs.

-The Indians lead in the A.L. Central Division is just a ½ game now in front of Minnesota.

-Tribe relief pitcher Boone Logan left the game with an arm injury. Logan will have a MRI today and will likely be headed to the disabled list.

-The Indians have today off before returning home Friday night to take on Toronto.

MLB – TODD FRAZIER TRADED TO YANKEES

The Chicago White Sox have traded third baseman Todd Frazier and closer David Robertson to the New York Yankees for relief pitcher Tyler Clippard and three prospects.  Frazier struck out in his Yankee debut as a pinch-hitter Wednesday in Minnesota.

NFL – DALLAS INVESTIGATION SUSPENDED INVOLVING ELLIOTT

Authorities in Dallas have suspended their investigation of an alleged assault that reportedly involved Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott.  Police cite a lack of witnesses and not being able to contact the victim.

-The Sunday night incident took place at a Dallas bar; leaving a 30-year-old man in the hospital with a nose injury.  No suspects were named and no arrests were made.

NBA – CAVS SIGN TURKISH PLAYER

The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed forward Cedi Osman from the Turkish Basketball League.

-Osman (6’8”, 215 lbs.) has spent the last five years playing overseas; averaging 13 points per game last season.

Danny Salazar will return to the Indians starting pitching rotation for his next start.  Salazar, who has been on the Disabled List since June 6th, has been making rehab starts in the minors.

Jose Ramirez has been named the Cleveland Indians nominee for the 2017 Heart and Hustle Award.  The award is given to the player who most represents a passion for the game of baseball, and best embodies the values, spirit and tradition of the game.  The winner will be announced in November.

MLB – DETROIT TRADES J.D. MARTINEZ

The Detroit Tigers have traded outfielder J.D. Martinez to Arizona for three prospects.

-Martinez, batting .305 with 16 home runs this year, can become a free agent after this season.

MLB – ASTROS’ CORREA OUT TWO MONTHS

The Houston Astros, who are running away with the AL West Division, will be without their All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa for 6 to 8 weeks.  Correa suffered a torn ligament in his left thumb during Houston’s game versus Seattle on Monday.

NBA – NO HOME OR ROAD JERSEYS NEXT SEASON

Nike will replace Adidas as the new uniform maker for the NBA this upcoming season.  The biggest change will be the elimination of specific ‘home’ and ‘road’ jerseys.  Instead, each team will have at least 4 jerseys, with the home team choosing what uniform to wear and the road team wearing any jersey that’s a different color.

NASCAR – TRUCK SERIES ON DIRT TONIGHT

The only NASCAR race on dirt will be held tonight in western Ohio.

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott was reportedly involved in an incident late Sunday night at a Dallas bar.

-The former Buckeye was not charged or listed as a suspect; and there was no police report filed during the incident where a man was allegedly assaulted.

-The NFL is currently investigating Elliott for domestic violence allegations made by his ex-girlfriend.

Former Michigan guard Andrew Dakich is transferring to Ohio State to play for new Buckeyes coach Chris Holtmann.

-Dakich is the son of former Bowling Green and Indiana head coach; and current ESPN broadcaster Dan Dakich.

-Andrew Dakich played three seasons at Michigan as a walk-on.

NBA NEWS – PIERCE SIGNS WITH BOSTON AND RETIRES

19-year NBA veteran Paul Pierce signed a one-day contract with Boston on Monday; allowing him to retire as a Celtic.

-Pierce spent the first 15 seasons of his career with the Celtics after being drafted by Boston in 1998.  Pierce won a NBA title with the Celtics in 2008.  He’s second all-time in scoring for Boston behind John Havlicek.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS HAVE LOST 4 IN A ROW

Oakland beat Cleveland 7-3 on Sunday afternoon…finishing off a 3-game sweep of the Indians.

-The Indians have now lost 4 games in a row; their first 4-game losing streak since July of 2015; ending the third longest stretch in American League history without a losing skid of at least 4 or more games.

-Indians starting pitcher Trevor Bauer couldn’t make it out of the 1st inning; only lasting 2/3 of an inning while giving up 4 runs.

-In the loss, Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor had 4 hits including 3 doubles; and Tribe outfielder Abe Almonte blasted a 500-foot solo home run.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have officially re-signed forward Kyle Korver to a 3-year deal.

-Korver joined the Cavaliers last season in January via trade from Atlanta.

-In 35 games with Cleveland, he averaged 11 points per game while shooting 48 % from three-point land.

NBA NEWS – LEAGUE TO REDUCE NUMBER OF LATE GAME TIMEOUTS

The NBA has approved a rule to lower the number of timeouts per game from 18 to 14.; as well as reducing allowed timeouts in the final two minutes of the game to two per team, instead of three per team.

-NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says the new rules are aimed at improving the pace and flow of the game.

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona missed his second straight game last night as he remained at the Cleveland Clinic while undergoing testing to determine the cause of recent health ailments.

-Indians Director of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti told reporters Wednesday that Francona could miss at least a few more games and that his status on managing the American League All-Star team next week in Miami has not yet been determined.

-Bench Coach Brad Mills will continue to serve as acting Tribe manager while Francona is away.

Free agent forward Gordon Hayward reportedly will sign a 4-year $128 million deal with the Boston Celtics.

-Hayward averaged 22 points and 5 rebounds a season ago. He’s played his entire career with Utah, being a first round pick by the Jazz in 2010.  Hayward will be re-united with his former college coach at Butler, Brad Stevens, now head coach of the Celtics.

Five Cleveland Indians have been named to the American League All-Star team for the mid-summer classic a week from Tuesday in Miami.

-Third baseman Jose Ramirez was voted in by the fans as a starter.

-Outfielder Michael Brantley and shortstop Francisco Lindor were named as reserves; along with starting pitcher Corey Kluber and relief pitcher Andrew Miller also making the AL All-Star squad.

-Tribe manager Terry Francona and his staff will manage the AL All-Star team.

-This is the first time Cleveland has had five all-stars since 2004.

TENNIS’ VENUS WILLIAMS AT BLAME IN FATAL CAR CRASH

Tennis player Venus Williams has been found at fault in a June 9th fatal car crash in Florida where the other vehicle’s passenger died two weeks later.

-Police say Williams violated the right of way of the other vehicle.

-Williams has not been charged or cited. The crash remains under investigation.

-Williams is a number 10 seed at next week’s Wimbledon tournament.

The Houston Rockets have acquired former L.A. Clippers all-star point guard Chris Paul.

-Paul now joins fellow all-star James Harden on the Rockets roster.

Sandusky Blue Streak quarterback Ja’Vez Alexander has announced he’ll be playing his college football at Michigan State.

-Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre hit a solo home in the top of the 9th inning off Cody Allen to give the Rangers the lead and the eventual win.

-In the loss, Indians starter Mike Clevinger allowed just 1 run on 2 hits and struck out a career-high 9 hitters.

TRIBE TIDBITS:

-Manager Terry Francona missed last night’s game after leaving Monday night’s game early due to chest pains.  Francona underwent tests Monday night at the Cleveland Clinic with doctors ruling out any major health issues.  His health will continued to be monitored; but Francona plans to be back for tonight’s game.  Francona had similar symptoms in a game on June 13th.

-Indians outfielder Austin Jackson has been placed on the disabled list with a quad strain.  Jackson will likely miss 3 to 4 weeks. To replace Jackson on the roster, the Indians re-called pitcher Shawn Armstrong from Triple-A.

-Florida wins series 2-0 to capture their first-ever College World Series championship.

NBA – KNICKS AND JACKSON TO END RELATIONSHIP

The New York Knicks and team president Phil Jackson are expected to announce today that they’re parting ways, according to ESPN.

-The former Chicago Bulls championship coach has been with the Knicks since 2014; with two years still remaining on his contract.

SPORTS – TUESDAY, JUNE 27TH, 2017

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS WITH HUGE COMEBACK WIN LAST NIGHT

Cleveland beat Texas 15-9 last night at Progressive Field (ending a 3-game losing streak)

-The Tribe trailed 7-1 after two innings and 9-2 in the fourth inning before going on a furious rally; scoring 4 times in the 5th, 5 times in the 6th and 3 more runs in the 7th inning.  Overall the Indians scored 13 unanswered runs from the bottom of the 4th inning on.  The Indians did not hit a home run last night.

-Francisco Lindor, Carlos Santana, and Lonnie Chisenhall all drove in 3 runs for the Indians.  Roberto Perez and Bradley Zimmer also drove in 2 runs a piece for Cleveland.

-Minnesota lost last night in Boston; meaning the Indians have re-gained first place in the American League Central by a half game over the Twins.

-The Indians take on Texas again tonight at 6:37/7:10 pm – LIVE on 95.3 WLKR.  Mike Clevinger will pitch for the Tribe.

TRIBE TIDBITS:

-Before the game last night, Cleveland activated outfielders Michael Brantley and Brandon Guyer from the disabled list and sent down relief pitcher Shawn Armstrong and outfielder Daniel Robertson to Triple-A.

-Starting pitcher Corey Kluber has been named the American League Player of the Week.  Kluber struck out 24 batters and tossed a shutout in two starts last week.

-Manager Terry Francona left the game early last night with apparent chest pains.  He was evaluated by Indians medical staff where he checked out fine.

-The last MLB All-Star voting update was released on Monday.  Four Indians are in striking distance of a starting nod with Jose Ramirez, Francisco Lindor, and Michael Brantley just one spot back and Edwin Encarnacion two spots back.  Voting ends this Thursday night at midnight.  The All-Star Selection Show takes place July 2nd.

MLB BASEBALL – INDIANS SWEPT BY TWINS

The Indians were shutout 4-0 by Minnesota on Sunday afternoon

-Minnesota catcher Jason Castro had 2 doubles and 3 runs driven in on Sunday.

-Minnesota won all 3 games in Cleveland over the weekend to overtake the Indians for first place in the American League Central division by a half-game. This comes after the Indians swept the Twins in a 4-game series last weekend.

-The Indians were shutout twice by the Twins in the 3-game series in Cleveland.

-The Indians open a 4-game series at home versus Texas tonight at 6:37/7:10 pm – LIVE on 95.3 WLKR.  Carlos Carrasco will pitch for the Tribe.

TRIBE TIDBITS:

-Former Indians slugger Mike Napoli will receive his 2016 American Championship ring tonight before the game; as it marks the first time he’s been back in Cleveland since signing with Texas in the offseason.

-The Indians have again signed utility player Michael Martinez to a minor league deal; and have assigned him to Triple-A Columbus.  Martinez spent time with the Tribe earlier this season and part of last season as well.

NHRA RACING – NATIONALS IN NORWALK OVER THE WEEKEND

Steve Torrence was the Top Fuel Dragster winner on Sunday at the 11th annual NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk.

Jack Beckman took home the win in Funny Car, Bob Butner won in Pro Stock, and LE Tonglet was victorious in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

NASCAR – HARVICK WINS ROAD RACE AT SONOMA 

Kevin Harvick was the winner of Sunday’s Monster Energy Series Toyota Save Mart 350 at Sonoma.  Clint Bower finished second with Brad Keselowski in third place.

-It was Harvick’s first win of the season and his first career victory at Sonoma.

-The NASCAR Monster Energy Series heads to Daytona this Saturday night for the Coke Zero 400 (6:30/7:30 pm – LIVE on K96)

-Washington point guard Markelle Fultz was the number one overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers.

-UCLA point guard Lonzo Ball was selected 2nd by the L.A. Lakers.

-Duke forward Jayson Tatum was selected 3rd by Boston.

-The Cleveland Cavaliers did not have a pick in the draft.

NBA trade last night: Minnesota reportedly acquired all-star Jimmy Butler from Chicago in exchange for Kris Dunn, Zach LaVine, and the number 7 overall pick in last night’s draft.

Major League Baseball has announced that the Cleveland Indians will play two regular season games next season in Puerto Rico.

-The Tribe will take on the Minnesota Twins in a 2-game series in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 17th and 18th of next year.

NBA – CAVS OFFER JOB TO BILLUPS

The Cleveland Cavaliers have offered former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Chauncey Billups the title of President of Basketball Operations.  Billups has yet to accept after two days of meetings.

-The Cavs mutually parted ways with former General Manager David Griffin earlier this week.

NBA – DRAFT IS TONIGHT

The 2017 NBA Draft takes place tonight at 7:00 pm in Brooklyn, New York.

NBA – CAVS RAISE OVER $800,000 DURING WATCH PARTIES

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced that $875,000 was raised during this past season’s road Playoff Watch Parties at Quicken Loans Arena.  The money will be donated to Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity.

NHL HOCKEY – COLUMBUS TAKES HOME TWO AWARDS LAST NIGHT

The NHL Awards and Expansion Draft was held last night in Las Vegas.

-Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky won the Vezina Trophy for the NHL’s top goaltender.  It’s the second time Bobrovsky has won the award.

-The Jack Adams award for the NHL’s top coach also went to John Tortorella of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

-The Vegas Golden Knights also selected their roster last night during the Expansion Draft.  From Columbus, Vegas selected William Karlsson and David Clarkson.

NHL HOCKEY – BLUE JACKETS FOLIGNO WINS AWARDS

Columbus Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno has won two awards ahead of tonight’s NHL Awards Show in Las, Vegas.

-Foligno was given the Mark Messier Leadership Award and King Clancy Memorial Trophy on Tuesday for leadership qualities on and off the ice.

-The 2017 NHL Awards take place tonight at 8:00 pm with three more Blue Jackets nominated for four awards: Sergei Bobrovsky for NHL MVP and top goaltender, defenseman Zach Werenski for top rookie and John Tortorella for top coach.

-The NHL Expansion Draft also takes place tonight as the first players will be announced for the Vegas Golden Knights.

NFL – BROWNS COLEMAN NOT IN TROUBLE YET FOR NEW YEAR’S INCIDENT

Cleveland Browns second year wide receiver Corey Coleman has been named in court documents as one of three men that participated in an alleged assault on New Year’s Eve in Cleveland.

-Coleman has yet to be charged with a crime.  The incident is still under investigation.

NBA – TWO NOTABLE TRADES ON TUESDAY

Two noteworthy NBA trades went down on Tuesday.

-The Los Angeles Lakers are sending former Buckeye D’Angelo Russell and former Cleveland Cavalier Timofey Mozgov to the Brooklyn Nets for Brook Lopez and the 27th pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft.

-Atlanta will send Dwight Howard and the 31st pick in Thursday’s draft to Charlotte in exchange for Miles Plumlee, Marco Belinelli and the 41st pick.

The Indians blasted Baltimore 12-0 last night (6th straight win for Cleveland)

Carlos Santana and Austin Jackson each drove in 3 runs with Santana hitting a 2-run home run (9th).  Lonnie Chisenhall had 2 RBI.  Jason Kipnis also hit a solo home run (8th).  The Indians had 16 hits overall on the night.

Jose Ramirez blasted 2 doubles last night; setting an Indians franchise record by hitting a double in 7 straight games.

Corey Kluber threw a complete game shutout; allowing just 3 hits with 11 strikeouts and no walks.

MEN’S GOLF – KOEPKA WINS U.S. OPEN

American Brooks Koepka was the winner of the U.S. Open tournament in Erin Hills, Wisconsin on Sunday.

-Koepka shot a five-under-par (-5) in Sunday’s final round to win the major tournament by 4 strokes (-16).

-It was Koepka’s first career major victory.  He took home $2.2 million.

WNBA – TAURASI BECOMES ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER

Diana Taurasi become the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer on Sunday.

-Taurasi, of the Phoenix Mercury, passed Tina Thompson for a career total of 7,488 points in the first half of her game versus L.A.

-Taurasi ended up with 19 points in the game; although her team lost 90-59.

NASCAR – AT MICHIGAN

Kyle Larson was the winner of the Monster Energy Series at Michigan FireKeepers Casino 400 race on Sunday.

-Chase Elliott finished second with Joey Lagano in third place.

-Cleveland has signed 9 of their 10 draft picks with first round pick, safety Jabrill Peppers out of Michigan, being the only selection not signed.

-Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez hit a solo home run (his 9th) and outfielder Michael Brantley drove in 2 runs in the loss.

-Tribe pitcher Corey Kluber last night became the fastest in club history to record 1,000 career strikeouts (148 games).  Kluber struck out 10 Dodgers last night.

MLB BASEBALL NEWS – PUIG SUSPENDED FOR GESTURE IN CLEVELAND

-Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig has been suspended one game by Major League Baseball for making an obscene gesture to fans in Cleveland Tuesday night after hitting a home run.

-Puig is appealing the suspension.

NFL NEWS – BROWNS SIGN ROOKIE QB KIZER, TOP PICK GARRETT INJURED

-The Cleveland Browns have signed 2nd round draft pick, quarterback DeShone Kizer, to a 4-year rookie contract.  The deal for the Notre Dame product is worth nearly $5 million.  The Browns have now signed 8 of their 10 draft picks.

-Browns number-one overall pick, defensive end Myles Garrett, suffered what appeared to be a foot injury on Wednesday during minicamp.  The injury is not believed to be serious.

Ohio State has named their Hall of Fame Class for 2017.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL – KENT STATE PLAYER DIES AFTER WORKOUT

A Kent State football player died Tuesday morning following a team workout.

-Incoming freshman offensive lineman Tyler Heintz, from Kenton, Ohio; was transported to a local hospital following team conditioning drills.

-His cause of death has not been determined.

NBA FINALS – GOLDEN STATE WINS NBA TITLE WITH GAME 5 VICTORY

Golden State beat Cleveland 129-120 – NBA Finals Game 5 –  last night

-Golden State wins series 4-1 for their second NBA championship in three seasons.

-Golden State’s Kevin Durant was named the MVP of the 2017 NBA Finals; along with leading the Warriors with 39 points on 14/20 shooting last night.  Steph Curry added 34 points for Golden State.

-LeBron James scored 41 points for the Cavs.  James is the only player in NBA history to average a triple-double throughout the NBA Finals.

Ohio State announced Monday that Thad Matta will no longer be their men’s basketball head coach; effective immediately.

-Matta, in 13 years at OSU, is the Buckeye’s all-time leader in wins with 327; including nine trips to the NCAA tournament, two Final Four appearances, a national title game appearance and five Big Ten regular season titles.

-Ohio State struggled the last two seasons; failing to make the NCAA tournament each year, with a record a season ago of 17-15.

Golfer Tiger Woods arrest for DUI on Monday was due to prescription medication.

-According to a police report, law enforcement found Woods asleep at the wheel before arresting him early Monday morning near his Jupiter, Florida home.  Woods reportedly told police he was taking numerous prescriptions including two painkillers.

-Woods had released a statement Monday following his arrest saying the incident was due to an “unexpected reaction” to prescription medication.

NBA PLAYOFFS – CLEVELAND BLASTS BOSTON IN GAME FIVE LAST NIGHT – OFF TO THE NBA FINALS

Cleveland Cavaliers beat Boston 135-102 – East Finals Game 5  

-Cavs win the series 4-1; and advance to their third straight NBA Finals to take on Golden State starting June 1st.  It marks the first time in NBA history that the same two teams will meet in the NBA Finals in three straight years. It’s LeBron James’ seventh straight appearance in the NBA Finals.

-The Cavs set a franchise record last night for the most points scored in a playoff game.

-LeBron James passed Michael Jordan for the most career playoff points in NBA history.  James scored 35 points last night.  Kyrie Irving also had 24 points.

-Boston never led at home at any point during the series.

-The Celtics were led by Marcus Smart who had 27 points and made 7 three-pointers.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon’s petition for reinstatement from an indefinite drug suspension has been denied by the NFL.

-Gordon has missed the last two seasons; and 43 out of the last 48 games due to suspensions.  Gordon can reapply in the fall.

Willard has named Joe Bedingfield as their new boys basketball varsity head coach.

-Bedingfield is a 2000 Willard graduate and a former player.

-He’s a former varsity assistant for Willard under former Coach Greg Nossaman as well as a three-year varsity head coach at Seneca East.  For the last four years, Bedingfield has been a seventh/eighth grade coach at South Central.

NFL – FORMER PLAYER AARON HERNANDEZ DIES FROM APPARENT SUICIDE

Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez died after reportedly committing suicide in a Massachusetts’ prison cell this morning.

Hernandez was serving a life sentence for a murder conviction from a 2013 shooting.

Hernandez was just acquitted in a different double murder case on Friday.

The one-time New England Patriot’s star was 27 years old.

-Three Cleveland sports greats will throw out ceremonial first pitches at the Cleveland Indians home opener next Tuesday; as Indians’ Jim Thome, Cavaliers’ Austin Carr, and Browns’ Jim Brown are slated to take the mound before the Indians face the White Sox at 4:10 pm.
