Erie County/Sandusky storm damage

A strong storm wreaked havoc on downtown Sandusky Thursday evening.

A couple of roofs were ripped off of buildings including one on Water Street that was intended to be the new home of the Lake Erie Shores and Islands tourism bureau.

Several cars around the city’s business district were also damaged by falling debris.

No injuries were reported.

 

Erie County/Man charged with rape

A Sandusky man has been arrested and charged with rape.

Authorities say the alleged incident involved 21-year-old Desmond Hopkins and an underage victim in May of 2016, with the victim recently contacting police.

 

Erie County/Devos’ yacht

Authorities in Erie County are reviewing surveillance video in hopes of nabbing the person who untied a yacht owned by the family of U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

The 40-million-dollar boat drifted into a dock at the Huron Boat Basin, resulting in 10-thousand-dollars in damage.

 

Erie County/NEXUS pipeline

Construction continues on the 255-mile NEXUS natural gas pipeline…

NEXUS spokesman Adam Parker told the Sandusky Register that the project is set to be in service by likely sometime in September; with the pipeline running through parts of Erie County in Berlin Heights and Milan as well as Sandusky County.

Local schools are poised to receive some major money from the pipeline including $6.2 million going to the Margaretta district and $3.6 million to Edison schools; which is expected to be available in 2020.

 

Ottawa County/First female police officer hired in Danbury

History was recently made in Danbury with the hiring of the Township’s first female police officer.

Vikki Fritz, a Perkins Township resident, was chosen for the job among eight other candidates.

Fritz graduated from the Sandusky Police Academy while working as an administrative assistant for Perkins’ building and highway department.

The Danbury Police Department has been around since 1969.

 

Huron County/Child support license amnesty

In August, the Huron County Child Support Enforcement Agency will be offering license amnesty.

Those with a suspended license due to non-support have a chance to have their license reinstated.

There’s a multi-step process, including a cash payment and résumé preparation.

 

Huron, Erie and Sandusky County/Bellevue flags of honor and community picnic

It’s setting up to be a busy weekend in Bellevue.

Central Park will be playing host to The Ohio Flags of Honor military memorial tonight through Sunday afternoon, as 800-plus American flags will be on display in remembrance of lives lost in the global fight against terror.

And…Robert Peters Park will be the site of the Bellevue Community Picnic on Saturday.

 

Erie, Huron and Richland Counties/Festival time

‘Tis the season for local festivals….

Tonight it’s the ‘Imagine Norwalk’ arts and music fest with a barbecue theme.

Starting this afternoon and Saturday, the village of Shiloh hosts their 52nd annual Fireman’s Ox Roast with 8,500 pounds of beef ready to be consumed.  A parade also takes place Saturday night.

On Saturday and Sunday, it’s the Wakeman Firefighters Homecoming Festival featuring a parade on Sunday afternoon.
