Suspected Norwalk arson under state investigation

State officials are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) involved in starting a fire at an abandoned farmhouse in Norwalk.

The fire Sunday afternoon overwhelmed three rooms at the house in the 1000 block of North Ridge Road.

The state fire marshal found likely fire accelerants in the structure after an investigation.

 

Man headed to prison for attempted rape

A 26 year-old man has pleaded guilty to an attempted rape in Sandusky.

Zachary Van Zandt was accused last October of breaking into a Chesapeake Lofts apartment and allegedly sexually assaulting a woman.

He’ll be sentenced in December, facing up to eight years in jail.

 

Maple City Ice strike continues…

It’s day number 36 of the strike by drivers at Maple City Ice in Norwalk.

Company president Pat Hipp told the Norwalk Reflector that negotiations are again scheduled for this Friday.

This follows earlier talks between Teamsters and Maple City Ice on September 15th and 19th; with the latter involving a federal mediator.

The strike is due to a dispute over pension money.

 

Open house to be held Saturday at Bellevue High School for new improvements

Bellevue High School is hosting a community open house event on Saturday to give the public a look at the facility’s nearly-$2 million in improvements.

It runs from 12 noon to 2:00 pm; and will include tours of the recently-renovated areas including the gymnasium, library, band room and several classrooms.

 

”Silent Alarm” parade this Sunday in Sandusky

A ‘silent alarm’ parade will be held Sunday afternoon in Sandusky to honor thirteen area fallen firefighters as well as remind the community about the dangers of unfriendly fire.

The parade begins at 5:30 pm at the Erie County Service Center parking lot; proceeding north along Columbus Avenue, and ending at the Erie County Firefighter’s Memorial.

Erie County Fire Departments will be driving at a slow pace with lights flashing, but will not be using their horns or sirens.

 

Norwalk Police Department is hiring

The police department in Norwalk is hiring.

Those interested should have at least a high school diploma and drivers license, be between 21 and 35 years-old and be able to pass a background check and physical assessment.

Sandusky Ohio Edison Employee Federal Credit Union merges with VacationLand

The 78 year-old Sandusky Ohio Edison Employee Federal Credit Union has agreed to merge with VacationLand Credit Union.

Preparations are now underway, which include the finalization of account transfers, which are expected to be done by November 1st.
