According to figures released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the county’s August unemployment rate was 8.6 percent. That’s down from 11 percent in July. Erie County’s August jobless rate was 6.2 percent, down from 6.9 percent the previous month. The statewide average was 7.3 percent.
An improperly discarded cigarette sparked a blaze that destroyed a Concord Court apartment.
Norwalk firefighters were called to scene shortly after 9:30 yesterday morning. They had the blaze under control within 15 minutes. No one was home at the time, but a kitten died in the blaze. Early damage estimates have been placed at $30,000.
Two arrests have been made, and a third is pending, in connection with an early Monday morning shooting in Sandusky.
20-year-old Morgan Weatherspoon is facing complicity charges, while 22-year-old Stanley Frankart is charged with attempted murder and and aggravated robbery. A third suspect, Jaron Ashburn remains at-large. Sandusky police said the three are responsible for the shooting of 34-year-old Lee Donald. He was shot in the head at his Eddy Henry Way home. He’s expected to make a full recovery. Weatherspoon was Donald’s on-and-off again boyfriend. She’s accused of giving Frankart and Ashburn information, to rob Donald’s home.
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office has received more than $37,000 in traffic safety grant funds for overtime enforcement patrols.
Deputies will use the money to target areas with a high number of traffic crashes, including U.S. Route 250, State Routes 2, 4, 60 and 61, along with Darrow, Mason and Strecker Roads. Deputies will concentrate on speed and seat belt violations, along with DUI offenders.

A man who killed two people, including a suburban Cleveland Police Officer was put to death this morning.
61-year-old Harry Mitts Jr. was pronounced dead at 10:39am. He had been on death row for nearly 20 years.
