JACK WHITE says the media mischaracterized his comments about LADY GAGA to instigate a beef between them. In a post on his website, Jack calls the reporting of his comments, quote, “tabloidesque drama baiting.” What he originally said was, quote, “I don’t think [Lady Gaga] lives it, because it’s all artifice. It’s all image with no meaning behind it. You can’t sink your teeth into it. It’s a sound bite. It’s very of this age, because that’s what people want.” But he was talking about the “presentation” of the music . . . not the music itself. He explains, quote, “I never said anything about her music, or questioned the authenticity of her songs in any way . . . I don’t like my comments about Lady Gaga’s presentation being changed into some sort of negative critique of her music . . .“Journalists should also be held accountable for what they say. Especially publications like the ‘NME’, who put whatever words they feel like between two quotation marks and play it off as a quote.” (–The “NME” added the words “Lady Gaga’s music” with his comments in the headline of their story.) Jack also says he thinks that the media’s sensationalism and hunger for drama discourages artists from attempting to say something of substance . . . for fear that their words will be spun and taken out of context. He closes with this: Quote, “Peace to Lady Gaga and I fully congratulate and compliment her on her championing of gay rights issues and the momentum it’s given to help create change.”
